GU17 SUMMER TOURNAMENTS

A Girls under-17 Premier Elite team led by Hiatt-Aleu, Nado Select Director of Olders, has had a busy summer. They’ve been playing in tournaments this summer in order to prepare for the upcoming Presidio season. This team features a dynamic group of players that are virtually unstoppable. Manny Neves, Nado Select Director of Coaching, explains, “Out of roughly 40 SoCal teams in the Presidio Soccer League, there were only 10 teams chosen to play in the Premier Elite Bracket. This bracket, along with the Premier Elite bracket of Coast Soccer League, represents the toughest and highest level of competition for females between the ages of 16 to 19 living in the USA.” For Coach Hiat-Aleu, the first nationally recognized tournament, Arsenal Cup (June 9-10), was a chance for him to see how the girls played. “I was happy with the result – getting into the semi-finals was great! There were three major weaknesses and three major strengths that I saw coming out of this tournament. Communication was not there yet, defensive shape was sloppy, and the team transitioned too slowly – these were three things we needed to fix in order to achieve success for the upcoming season. Fortunately these weaknesses were offset by the team’s unity, aggressiveness, and strong desire to be successful,” said Hiatt-Aleu.  It was back to training at the Cays and the team had three weeks to get set for their next three tournaments. Next, the Girls played in the Pegasus Cup (July 7-9, 2007).  Nado went undefeated in this tournament and outscored their opponents 11-2.  Alexis Barbara led the Nado Girls in scoring with additional scoring help coming from Rachel Naranjo, Lindsey Gatlin, and Cristina Martinez. “We knew what we needed to work on. The girls trained hard and this tournament had proven that we had overcome our weaknesses. The Girls had a chance to experience success, which ultimately prepared them for their next ultra-competitive tournament, the Pateadores Cup,” said Hiatt-Aleu. The Pateadores Cup, Irvine, CA (July 21-23, 2007), is a tournament that does not go unnoticed by the competitive soccer community as well as scouting college coaches. Again, Nado went undefeated and did not allow a single goal throughout the tournament, starting with a 2-0 victory over Hawaii’s Real Copa under-17 team. The Nado Girls defense, led by goalkeeper Andrea Davis, recorded four consecutive shutouts. The Championship game found Nado winning 1-0 against the Cerritos Regional Infinity Soccer Club. Hiatt-Aleu was real happy with the result. “Each game was tougher than the last and I was extremely pleased that we did not give up a goal,” commented Hiatt-Aleu. Lastly, the Girls won their very own Coronado Crown City Classic (August 4-5, 2007).  The Girls played an impressive tournament. They beat their opponents 15-3 in a total of four games. These summer tournaments have helped the Nado Girls prepare for upcoming Presidio League games. They achieved a lot over the summer and they will keep working hard in order to achieve success for the rest of the season. “Nado Select is honored to have these girls be a part of our club,” comments Manny Neves, “They represent girls who have enhanced the community as well as Nado Select. Through their dedication to soccer, they have achieved an extraordinary feat that is only attainable through hard work and dedication. We expect great things from these girls for the upcoming season as well as in the future.” NADO Select GU17 – Roster: Jayde Aman-Siwy • Laura Del Castillo • Alexis Barbara • Lindsey Gatlin • Paige Berube • Tiffany Lambert • Brooke Clifford • Cristina Martinez • Mackenzie Coutts • Rachel Naranjo • Yasmin Davalos • Sadie Spezzano • Andrea Davis • Nicole Williams
